45 listing myths: errors that stubbornly persist — and what applies instead

Lesson 17/17 ⏱ ~15 Min. By Enes Kurt Updated August 2026
What you'll take away

Twelve of these errors you know from lesson 11. Here are all 45 — sorted by topic, each with what applies instead and the evidence grade of the correction. A few were once true and haven't been since an Amazon change; most never were and were merely copied often enough. Read the lesson once in one go, then block by block against your own listing.

1Ranking and visibility: seven errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“Amazon ranks by the A10 algorithm, and I can optimize for it specifically.”There is no Amazon source for “A10”; A9.com was a subsidiary for search technology. Amazon describes its search as an interplay of several methods and publishes no algorithm documentation. Call observations observations.Amazon forum, 2004 press release, SIGIR 2016
“If I run enough ads, that pulls my organic ranking up with it.”Open and disputed; no Amazon source. The only traceable path is via additional sales — on keywords where you rank up front organically, the paid click mostly replaces a free one. Check your own numbers (lesson 12).disputed
“Visitors from Google, Instagram or TikTok are rewarded directly by Amazon in the ranking.”No Amazon document names external traffic as a factor. Plausible only indirectly via sessions and sales — and external traffic often converts worse, so it can degrade the signal.no Amazon evidence
“The results list simply shows the most relevant products.”Part of page 1 is ad space, not reachable organically; the share is Amazon's business decision. Measure position within the organic results.FTC lawsuit 2023 (allegations, US market)
“The Featured Offer goes to whoever has the lowest price.”Amazon names several criteria side by side — price, delivery speed, performance — without weighting; being considered doesn't mean being featured. And the landed price including shipping counts (lesson 14).Amazon announcement 2026
“Since the eligibility check was removed, my seller performance no longer matters for the Featured Offer.”The exact reversal of Amazon's statement: the selection stays the same, only the yes/no pre-filter is gone. Watch the Featured Offer percentage as a curve.Amazon announcement 2026
“If one of my listings is suppressed, my account is in danger.”Search suppression and account violations are two different things. The offer stays active, disappears from the index, a violation notice usually doesn't appear — Amazon lists affected offers in a dedicated view with an error field.Practice
In plain terms

The ranking myths all have the same shape: someone made an observation, gave it a name and resold the name as a rule. Only the frame is documented — two stages, buyer behavior acts on the order, advertising buys visibility. Everything more precise is guesswork, however confident it sounds.

Example: what “optimizing for A10” costs in practice

A seller reads that “A10 weighs external traffic more heavily than A9” and sends €600 of Instagram ads to his listing. 1,400 visitors, 19 sales — a 1.4 percent conversion rate versus 8 percent from Amazon search. Sessions rise, conversion per session falls, and for the three target keywords the organic position doesn't change because none of the 19 sales came via those searches. €600 for a signal that doesn't exist as such — and a worse conversion rate on top. The same amount as a Sponsored Products bid on exactly those three search terms would have produced sales via search that Amazon attributes to the keyword (Growth, lesson 3).

2Title and the 75-character change: five errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“My title may have 200 characters, so I use them all.”Outdated. Since 27 July 2026 a limit of 75 characters including spaces applies in all categories except media; the 200 applied from January 2025 to July 2026. Amazon's own public SEO page still states the old number — the announcement in German Seller Central is what counts.Amazon
“The 75-character rule only applies to amazon.com.”Amazon published the announcement in the German Seller Central forum; the Händlerbund reports the same for the European marketplaces.Amazon
“Whoever doesn't shorten in time gets their listing blocked.”The title is replaced, not the offer — offers stay active. That's no all-clear: the process is less conspicuous than a block, and whoever misses the message notices the AI title only by the ranking loss.Amazon
“I can simply cut my 200-character title at 75.”The front of the old title holds brand and generic product type, the back holds the features that set you apart. Cutting keeps the interchangeable part. Rewrite the title (lesson 2).Practice
“I avoid umlauts in the title, they count double.”Confusion with the backend: bytes are counted there. The title counts characters — an ä like an a. “Kuechenmaschine” wastes space for no gain.Amazon
3Backend search terms and hidden fields: six errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“I separate backend search terms with commas and repeat my most important title keywords there.”Spaces only as separators; the field is overflow for terms that appear nowhere else. What effect a repetition would have, Amazon doesn't say — the argument is the bytes you'll miss for a synonym.Amazon
“The backend field was expanded to 500 characters.”Unconfirmed (Händlerbund report 2024, doubted in the comments already). Amazon publicly gives 250, 249 and 200 bytes — stay well below (lesson 16).Practice
“Platinum keywords are a hidden ranking lever hardly anyone knows.”There is no evidence of a lever effect. A relic of the old Platinum Merchant program; prioritize last, behind mandatory and filter fields.Practice
“Target audience and Other attributes are free extra space for keywords.”Not listed as indexed by search in Amazon's attribute table — but “Used by browse”. Not ineffective, not ranking space. Time into mandatory and filter fields (lesson 13).Practice
“I write common typos into the backend.”Amazon: “Include spelling variants. Misspellings are not necessary.” Typos only cost bytes.Amazon (forum quote)
“I enter both singular and plural.”Amazon: “Use either singular or plural. It is not necessary to enter both forms.” The second form costs bytes you'll miss for a real synonym.Amazon (forum quote)
4Bullet points and product description: four errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“My bullet points may be 500 characters long.”Amazon's requirements name more than 10 and fewer than 255 characters per bullet, 150 in individual categories. No verified source gives 500. Violations: the bullet gets changed or removed.Practice
“Bullet points are always fully indexed, so I can fit any number of keywords.”Amazon's search glossary: bullet points are not always indexed by search but always fully displayed. Displayed and indexed are two things — key terms up front.Practice (login page)
“HTML in the description is allowed, bold tags still show on some listings.”amazon.de announced the switch-off after 8 June 2021; lines with a tag are removed or shown unformatted. Plain text in short paragraphs.Amazon
“My A+ content is live, I can leave the description field empty.”A+ only covers the description visually; the field remains in Seller Central. Whether the covered text is indexed is open — leaving it filled costs nothing and is the fallback if A+ is rejected.Amazon (forum reply)
5A+ content, brand and Brand Registry: six errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“A+ content is indexed for search, so I place keywords there once more.”No public Amazon document names A+ copy as a ranking factor; the most-cited counter-source contains no test. A+ is a presentation tool — never move a ranking keyword from title or bullets there.Practice
“Premium A+ costs money or is only available from 5 million dollars in revenue.”Amazon: A+ is free for eligible sellers. A trade report mentions a broad Premium unlock in May 2026 — without an Amazon announcement, amazon.de unclear. Check the A+ Content Manager.Amazon / trade report
“Only the brand owner can create A+ content.”The Reseller role in Brand Registry entitles authorized sellers to A+, Brand Stores and Sponsored Brands (not Brand Analytics). The brand owner assigns it for free.Amazon
“I have to wait until my trademark is registered.”Via the IP Accelerator, Brand Registry enrollment works right after filing the trademark application. Amazon names negotiated maximum fees of the partner law firms (€360 DPMA, €540 EUIPO) plus office fees.Amazon
“I create A+ content once, then it's done.”Since 22 Feb 2026 Amazon's Content Quality Analysis scores published A+ pages weekly (“Needs Improvement” / “Meets Standards”). Approval is no longer the end of the review.Practice
“Amazon Posts is a good free channel for brand reach.”Discontinued: no new posts since June 2025, program ended July 2025; replacement per Amazon are Brand Stores and Amazon Live. A guide still recommending Posts in 2026 isn't maintained.Amazon
6Product images: six errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“Keywords in the image file name improve my ranking.”The file name is a mapping key of product identifier, variant code and extension — read by the bulk upload, not by search. Extra characters can disrupt recognition. A Google Images rule transferred to a different platform.Practice
“Images must be at least 1,600 × 1,600 pixels or Amazon rejects them.”Three thresholds mixed up: 500 to 10,000 px required, over 1,000 px recommended for zoom, 1,600 is a third-party recommendation. 1,200 px isn't rejected; 2,000 × 2,000 sidesteps the argument.Amazon
“A slightly cream-white background is fine.”Amazon requires RGB 255, 255, 255 with no tolerance. Most common unnoticed causes: soft cut-out edges, missing or wrong color profiles.Amazon
“AI-generated product images are banned on Amazon.”Amazon doesn't prohibit AI editing. What matters: the image shows the delivered product correctly and follows the main-image rules. New since July 2026: labeling duty for photorealistic AI people (contains-synthetic-performer).Amazon
“From August 2026 I have to label everything I created with AI.”Wrong in two directions: Amazon's duty covers only photorealistic, fully AI-generated people; Art. 50 AI Act creates no general duty — visibly label only deepfakes. AI product copy isn't covered (lesson 15).Amazon / law
“A model in the main image is fundamentally banned.”Category-dependent — partly the reverse: for women's and men's apparel the main image should show the product on a model, children's apparel flat, no mannequin visible for accessories. Style guide from 2021 — check your current category style guide.Amazon (style guide)
Example: the file-name myth and its price

A seller names 180 image files by the pattern “spice-grinder-ceramic-stainless-set-B0XYZ12345.jpg” because a blog recommends keywords in file names. In the bulk image upload the mapping fails because Amazon's scheme expects ASIN.variant.extension — 180 images don't land on the product, an afternoon of rework. Ranking effect of the keywords: zero, because search doesn't read file names. In the single upload via the interface the name wouldn't have mattered — but there, too, without effect.

7Reviews and Vine: five errors
ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“Five reviews raise purchase likelihood by 270 percent, Amazon says.”The study exists (Spiegel Research Center, Northwestern, 2017 with PowerReviews) but measures no Amazon data and compares with zero reviews — the jump from 0 to 5 is trivially large, the added benefit drops quickly afterwards.Study
“My goal is 5.0 stars.”Purchase likelihood peaks between 4.0 and 4.7 and drops again toward 5.0 — flawless ratings look manipulated. Direction reliable, exact thresholds not (no Amazon data).Study
“Products with over 1,000 reviews rank 67 percent higher.”Such percentages circulate without a traceable source, sometimes presented as “Amazon's internal data”. Only the indirect path via conversion rate is traceable.no primary source
“Amazon Vine costs 200 euros per ASIN.”US price in dollars. amazon.de: €0 / 70 / 170 per tier (up to 2 / 10 / 30 units), fee only from three units and the first review within 90 days; tier not changeable.Practice (forum announcement 2023)
“A small thank-you for a review is fine as long as I don't ask for five stars.”Incentives of any kind violate Amazon's review policy — vouchers, free products, discounts, insert cards — up to permanent account deactivation. In Germany, Annex No. 23c UWG comes on top. Only “Request a Review”.Law / Amazon
Example: why 5.0 isn't the goal — in numbers

Two one-star ratings among five reviews push the average to 3.4, even if the other three give five stars each. With 200 reviews the same two still leave 4.96. That's why you plan reviews before launch (Vine, “Request a Review” consistently), not after — and why a 4.5 with three hundred votes is more credible to the customer than a 5.0 with seven. Whoever optimizes from 4.4 to 4.6 gains little; whoever gets from 3.7 past 4.0 works into the range where purchase likelihood is highest.

8Law and liability: six errors
Important

Not legal advice — the explanations and deadlines are in lesson 15; in doubt, ask someone who is liable for it.

ErrorWhat appliesEvidence
“For the GPSR a link to the manufacturer's site or a linked PDF is enough.”Art. 19 GPSR requires the information clearly and visibly in the offer itself — before the purchase decision, not one click away. The Händlerbund: a link is not sufficient.Law
“I'm only a retailer, the GPSR manufacturer duties hit my supplier.”Not for private labels: under Art. 3 No. 8, whoever markets under their own name or brand counts as the manufacturer. Whoever imports under their own brand is the manufacturer — not the factory.Law
“If the manufacturer prints an efficacy claim on the packaging, I may write it in the listing too.”You are liable for the content of your offer. For health-related claims the prohibition principle of the Health Claims Regulation applies: only what is authorized is allowed. The supplier's packaging is no defense.Law
“There's a CE mark on the product, so the product-safety requirements are met.”The CE mark is a manufacturer's self-declaration under the harmonized EU rules. It replaces neither the GPSR information duties in the offer nor an efficacy claim.Law
“The test result is genuine, so I may advertise with it.”Only with an easily findable reference — otherwise it counts as missing (case law). The seal itself is usually trademark-protected and needs a license.Case law
“My listing is online, Amazon checked it, so it's legally fine.”Amazon checks catalog and platform rules and technically enforces individual laws (GPSR fields, EPR, unit price). Textile labeling, health claims, test seals and environmental claims are checked by competitors and associations.own source review
Block by block against your own listing

Take the eight blocks as a checklist: open one listing per block, read every error as a question (“Did I enter both singular and plural?”) and note the answer. Fix backend errors immediately (they cost nothing), legal errors today (otherwise they cost), title and image errors by the one-change principle. The listing check finds the copy cases among them in 40 seconds.

9Expert insight: why myths survive — four mechanisms and the three-question test

That an error appears in one guide is chance. That it appears in thirty has a system. Four mechanisms produce almost all 45 entries of this lesson — and whoever knows them recognizes the next myth before it lands on a list:

  • The copy cascade: one post gives a number without a source (“30 % conversion weight”). The second cites the first, the third the second. After five steps the number counts as “known” — and nobody has ever seen the survey. Tell-tale sign: the source reference is another blog.
  • The marketplace jump: a US rule without a marketplace reference is read as a global rule. Vine prices, “Alexa for Shopping”, return-fee thresholds — all circulate for amazon.de although only amazon.com is documented. Tell-tale sign: dollar amounts, “Buy Box” instead of “Featured Offer”, no German source.
  • The outdated truth: 200 title characters, Amazon Posts, HTML in the description — all were once true. Guides don't age visibly; the 2024 page ranks just as well in 2026. Tell-tale sign: no date, or one before the last Amazon change on the topic.
  • The login gap: Amazon's seller help sits behind the login. Whoever cites it can't cite publicly verifiably — so a paraphrase emerges, then a paraphrase of the paraphrase. Tell-tale sign: “Amazon says” without a link, or with a link to a page that doesn't open without an account.

The three-question test for every circulating number: Who says it (Amazon itself, law, study, service provider)? When (before or after the last change on the topic)? For which marketplace? If one answer is missing, the number is undocumented — not wrong, but not reliable. That's exactly how the 92 claims came about that didn't survive verification for the guide.

Worked example: what a single backend myth costs

“Enter both singular and plural” and “include typo variants” — two myths from one guide. A seller enters singular, plural and one typo variant for six terms: 18 entries instead of 6. At about 11 bytes per word the 12 superfluous entries take up about 130 bytes — two thirds of the 200-byte corridor from lesson 16. Space for about twelve real synonyms and use cases is gone: “bath sheet”, “sauna towel”, “guest towel”, “hotel quality” … Each of these terms is a query for which the listing doesn't even enter the candidate set. An afternoon of backend care by Amazon's wording (“either singular or plural”, “misspellings not necessary”) gives the space back — for free.

Dating a guide

Before following a guide, look for three things: a date, a source per number and a marketplace reference. If one is missing, treat the post as undocumented and check the core claim in German Seller Central. Three immediate exclusion criteria for 2026: “200-character title”, “Amazon Posts” and “A10”. If one of them is in there, the rest isn't maintained.

Keywords in the image file name (say spice-grinder-ceramic.jpg) improve the ranking — is that true?
That's a Google Images rule transferred to a platform that works differently. In the single upload via the interface the name is arbitrary — and equally without effect.
A guide recommends “Amazon Posts” to you in 2026 for free brand reach. What does that tell you?
Amazon points to Brand Stores and Amazon Live as replacements. Recommending a discontinued program is the surest sign of a guide without a date.
“Premium A+ content costs money or is only available from 5 million dollars in annual revenue” — is that true?
The only reliable check is looking into your own A+ Content Manager: if Premium modules are selectable, you have them — regardless of revenue thresholds from blogs.
“Five reviews raise purchase likelihood by 270 percent, Amazon says” — what's true about that?
The study is serious, but the jump from 0 to 5 reviews is trivially large. It also shows purchase likelihood peaks between 4.0 and 4.7 stars — not at 5.0.
“If one of my listings is suppressed, my account is in danger” — is that true?
A violation notice usually doesn't appear — which is why the suppressed-listings view belongs in the weekly walk-through: whoever doesn't look there notices only in the sales figures.
“Bullet points are always fully indexed, so I can fit any number of keywords” — what does Amazon's search glossary say?
Because display and indexing diverge, the most important terms belong in bullets 1 to 3 — and keyword ballast in bullets 4 and 5 may do nothing at all for search.

Frequently asked

How do I know whether a guide is current?

Look for three things: a date, a source per number and a marketplace reference. If one is missing, treat the post as undocumented. Three immediate exclusion criteria for 2026: “200-character title”, “Amazon Posts” and “A10” — if one of them is in there, the rest isn't maintained.

Are all 45 errors also wrong for amazon.com?

The catalog and ranking errors largely yes, because Amazon's rules are the same there — though with partly different rollout dates. The legal errors are German and European; different laws apply in the US. And some numbers are errors precisely because they transfer US values to amazon.de (Vine 200 dollars).

What do I do if I've implemented one of these errors in my listing?

By urgency: fix legal errors today (otherwise they cost a cease-and-desist letter), backend errors immediately (they cost nothing and take effect in one to three days), title and image errors by the one-change principle with a measurement window. And check the guide the error came from for the rest of its claims as well.
