Create a barcode
SVG scales without loss and is the right choice for print shops and label printers. PNG at 300 dpi is enough for your own printer. The quiet zone around the code is part of both files, do not crop it away.

Which barcode for what
| Type | Length | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| EAN-13 | 13 digits | product number in Europe, printed on the packaging. You need it to create a new product on Amazon. |
| UPC-A | 12 digits | product number from the USA and Canada |
| EAN-8 | 8 digits | very small packaging |
| Code 128 (FNSKU) | usually 10 characters, starts with X00 | Amazon's warehouse number for your item, goes on the FBA label |
EAN, GTIN, FNSKU and ASIN
- GTIN is the umbrella term. EAN-13, UPC-A and EAN-8 are GTINs. They are issued through GS1 to the company that owns the brand.
- FNSKU is assigned by Amazon to every item in your seller account that is fulfilled by Amazon. It goes on the label, not into the product data.
- ASIN is Amazon's catalogue number for the product page. It is the same for every seller of that product.
Where the EAN comes from
You can't make up an EAN. Amazon checks product IDs against the GS1 database: a number is only valid if it is registered there, and the GS1 details have to match what you enter on Amazon. You get your own numbers from GS1 in your country. If your product already has a manufacturer EAN, use that one.
The checker above verifies the check digit, so it catches typos and swapped digits. Whether a number is registered to your brand only GS1 can tell.
Printing FNSKU labels correctly
- Cover any other barcode. The warehouse should only scan your FNSKU, not the EAN on the packaging.
- Everything on the label: barcode, FNSKU in plain text, product name and condition. The generator lays that out on a 25.4 × 50.8 mm (1 × 2 inch) label.
- Print black on white, ideally with a thermal or laser printer, and don't crop the quiet zone.
- Stick it on a flat surface, not across edges, seams or curves.
Whether your units need an Amazon label or the manufacturer barcode is enough is set by Amazon per offer. Seller Central shows it when you create the shipment. How shipping to Amazon works is covered in the lesson FBA shipment.
Size and quiet zone
At nominal size an EAN-13 has a module of 0.33 mm and is 37.29 mm wide including quiet zones and 25.93 mm high. GS1 allows 80 to 200 % of that. Below 80 % not every checkout reads it reliably. The quiet zone is the white margin left and right of the bars, for EAN-13 11 modules on the left and 7 on the right. Without it the scanner can't tell where the code starts.
Frequently asked questions
Can the generator create an EAN number for me?
No, on purpose. The generator turns a number you already have into a barcode. A made-up EAN would have a valid check digit, but Amazon checks product IDs against the GS1 database. You get your own numbers from GS1.
Where do I find my FNSKU?
In Seller Central in the inventory overview of your item, once it is set to Fulfilled by Amazon. For most items it starts with X00.
How is the EAN check digit calculated?
The last digit follows from the others: from right to left, multiply the digits alternately by 3 and 1, add everything up, and the difference to the next multiple of ten is the check digit. Enter one digit too few and the generator adds it.
SVG or PNG, which do I need?
SVG for print shops and label printers, it scales without loss. PNG at 300 dpi is enough for your own printer. Both already include the quiet zone.
Do I need an EAN for Amazon at all?
For a new product usually yes. Brands without a barcode can apply for a GTIN exemption in Seller Central. If you sell a product that already exists on Amazon, you list it under that ASIN.
Are my numbers stored?
No. The generator and the checker run entirely in your browser.
