Check digits for many numbers

Whether someone else's listing already uses your number is shown by the EAN checker in the Toolbox, with a lookup on amazon.de. Free with your Listimo account.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your numbers are not sent or stored.

Generating a barcode vs. getting a UPC

The generator draws the barcode for a number you already have and calculates the check digit. It can't give you the number itself: the first part, which identifies your company, is assigned only by GS1.

Amazon verifies every UPC against the GS1 database. UPCs that don't match the GS1 data are treated as invalid and removed, and Amazon warns this can cost you the right to create ASINs or to sell at all. So use the generator for numbers you own: from GS1 or from the manufacturer of your product. For the FBA warehouse label there is the FNSKU label generator.

How to get a UPC code: GS1 US options and cost

OptionNumbersOne-timePer year
Single GS1 US GTIN1$30none
GS1 Company Prefixup to 10$250$50
GS1 Company Prefixup to 100$750$150
GS1 Company Prefixup to 1,000$2,500$500

Prices as listed by GS1 US on October 21, 2026. For sellers with only a few products, GS1 US itself says a single UPC may be the most cost-effective route. Single GTINs are not available for drugs, variable-measure products, mixed cases or coupons. Every product and every variant, each size and each colour, needs its own number.

Selling from Europe? GS1 Germany sells 10 numbers for €60 a year (SmartStarter10, up to €250,000 annual revenue), GS1 France charges by revenue from €120 to join plus €104 a year. Details are on the German and French versions of this page.

From number to barcode, step by step

  1. License your number at GS1 US and enter brand name and product description for each GTIN.
  2. Use the same brand name on Amazon as in your GS1 record, so the numbers match the brand you list.
  3. Create the barcode with the generator above and print it on the packaging.
  4. Enter it on Amazon as product ID type UPC (12 digits) or EAN (13 digits).

Selling on Amazon without a UPC: the GTIN exemption

Some products don't need a UPC at all. Amazon grants an exemption for private label and handmade products, for your own products made without barcodes, for parts without a product ID, for bundles and for generic unbranded goods. There is no exemption if the product already has a UPC or GS1 barcode, if the brand requires a UPC on Amazon, or if the product is already in the catalog.

  1. In Seller Central open Add a Product and choose to create a new listing.
  2. Enter the product type and brand name, or mark the product as having no brand name.
  3. Tick that you don't have a product ID. Generic products and your own brand without IDs are usually approved automatically, then allow about 30 minutes. If the brand needs approval first, Amazon decides within 48 hours.

The photos decide: Amazon wants real photos of product and packaging from all six sides, no renderings. The brand name has to be permanently attached, printed, embossed or sewn in. Removable stickers and digitally added logos get rejected. An exemption applies per marketplace and per category, and then covers all products of the brand there. For bundles, each item either has no GTIN of its own or belongs to your approved brand.

UPC-A and EAN-13: one number, two formats

The UPC-A barcode carries a 12-digit GTIN-12, the EAN-13 barcode a 13-digit GTIN-13. Add a leading 0 to a UPC and you have the same number in 13 digits. GS1 says both formats work internationally: your UPC works in Europe and an EAN works in the US. The generator detects a UPC entered in the EAN-13 field and adds the 0 for you.

Print size and placement

  • Size: GS1 US allows an X-dimension (narrowest bar) from 0.0104 to 0.0260 inches, that is 1.174 to 2.936 inches wide with bars 0.72 to 1.8 inches tall. That matches the 80 to 200 % in the generator.
  • Quiet zones: at least nine times the X-dimension left and right. Both download files include them.
  • Colour: dark bars on a light background, never red bars.
  • Don't stretch or crop: create the barcode again at the size you need, and don't shorten the bars.

Can this generator create a UPC number for me?

No. A made-up number would have a valid check digit, but Amazon verifies UPCs against the GS1 database and removes numbers that don't match. The generator turns a number you own into a barcode.

How much does a UPC code cost?

At GS1 US a single GTIN costs $30 once, with no annual fee. A company prefix for up to 10 numbers costs $250 plus $50 a year, up to 100 numbers $750 plus $150 a year.

Can I buy cheap UPC codes from resellers?

Amazon tells sellers to get UPCs directly from GS1, not from third parties selling UPC licenses. Numbers that don't match the GS1 data are treated as invalid, listings get removed and you can lose the right to create ASINs or to sell.

Do I need a separate UPC for each size and colour?

Yes. Every product and every variant needs its own number.

Does my UPC work on Amazon Europe?

Yes. GS1 numbers are meant for global use, and Amazon accepts both UPC and EAN as product IDs. A 12-digit UPC is a 13-digit EAN with a leading 0.

What is a GTIN exemption?

Amazon's permission to list a product without a UPC, for example private label, handmade or generic products. You apply per marketplace and category, with photos showing the brand permanently on the product or packaging.

Are my numbers stored?

No. The generator and the check digit list run entirely in your browser.
